Physician Ratings and Other Tools

As you begin the process of looking for a new doctor, you may wonder where to start. If you are new to the area, you likely do not already know of several doctors who have a good local reputation. There are many tools you can use to help you make this decision. Physician ratings are one of them.

Physician ratings rate doctors on a wide range of criteria. Choosing a top-rated doctor can give you the peace of mind you need to trust the doctor. Before you use these rating systems, you need to understand how they work.

These sites and tools that rate doctors all operate on a slightly different formula. Some will rate doctors based primarily on their credentials. For instance, the training they have, the quality of the school they attended, the type, location, and length of their residency, all will play a role in the rating. Others will rate doctors based on what former patients have to say about them. Yet others will use a combination of these to create a rating that considers both patient scores and the scores from their credentials. All of these can be good rating ideas, but you simply need to know how the physician ratings are tabulated to help you make an informed decision.

There are other tools you can use to help you find a good doctor outside of physician ratings, although the rating is one of the best options to look at. You can also ask those around you for recommendations as to which doctor they use or have heard of. If you have contacts in your geographic area, start with them. If you have recently moved, you may not have these contacts, but if you do, ask for recommendations. Keep in mind that you may not be able to get a recommendation if you are looking for a doctor in a highly specialized area of medicine.

You can also use your insurance provider as a tool when choosing a new doctor. While you will not get any information about the quality of a doctor form your insurance company, you can get information about the doctors that accept their plan and the ones that will be in the coverage network. This can prevent you from making a costly mistake when visiting the wrong doctor.
