Every woman likes to look good. Whether her tastes are as flamboyant as Madonna's or as understated as Jennifer Anniston's, the female of the species in countries the world over has one thing in common: the desire to be the belle of the ball.

In achieving her ambition to 'dazzle 'em all,' a woman often commits herself to gruelling grooming rituals. Other women squeeze and contort their bodies into outfits of ludicrously little practicality. Victims of the size zero craze go to even more bonkers measures. Wiser women are gentler on themselves and know the benefits of prevention over cure, or health over madness. Even wiser women know how to be kinder to themselves and treat themselves to detoxifying treatments at beauty salons and health spas rather than pounding themselves on tread mills.

A visit to a beauty salon means different things to different women. Some will associate the beauty salon with pain, like the undeniably excruciating sensation of having hair ripped from skin. Others associate it with positive feelings, such as the heavenly touch of that rarest of creatures: a masseuse so skilled that she can instinctively iron out every muscular knot in her client's body.

There's one thing every woman will say about the beauty salon: it's a refuge for hard-working sisters. It's a place where she can lay low and regenerate her batteries; a place where she won't be nagged at or called on to 'fix this' or 'dress that' or 'go here' or 'run there.' It's a sort of fifth dimension, really, where luxurious circumstances allow a pause on the reality button.

Many a woman has entered through the doors of a beauty salon only to afterward report of being mentally, emotionally and physically transported to a virtual utopia. It's not an abduction, more divine intervention. Imagine the soccer mom, her last kid dropped off after a painstaking morning of chores, her hair looking more bird-nest than Sunday-best. An hour spent in a beauty salon does more for her vitality levels than a month of sleep.
